AppalachianTrail > Glenda  > Hobbies > Backpacking 101
On June 15, 2008 I travelled to Damascus, Virginia to meet a group of women to go on a 7 day Backpacking trip booked with Adventures in Good Company. The trip was an introduction to lightweight backpacking. We hiked the Appalachian Trail from Fox Creek to Va. 601. The group consisted of two guides, Jan trailname Rerun from Mi,and Leigh trailname Almanac from Ga, and an assistant guide, Catherine trailname Songbird from Mi. In addition to our guides there were 10 women: Judy from Tn, trailname Commando, Ellen from Tn, trailname Buckaroo, Susan trailname Twinkle Toes from Tn, Karen trailname Doc from Oh, Patti trailname Beacon from Oh, Nancy trail name Kool Granny from Ga, Glenda trailname Sheriff Cougar from NC, Aseeyah trailname Bad Boy from Va, Katy trailname Twigs from Mn, Victoria trailname Guardian from Va. These are photos taken from the beginning of our journey all the way to the end. We were given indepth instruction on everything we needed to know about backpacking, from how to setup a tent, the different types of tents, methods for purifying water, stoves and cooking methods, appropriate clothing for backpacking, what to take into the woods, how to pack it, what to leave behind, safety, sanitation, hydration, knots, setting up tarps, bear bagging, adjusting your pack, foot care, trail ettiquite and a multitude of skills to equip you for venturing into the outdoors on your own. This was the greatest adventure I have ever been on. I made total strangers lifetime friends. I have never laughed so much for so long. I actually got tired of laughing! From our Guides to my fellow participants it was a first class act and I wouldn't change a thing if I could do it all again. Fellow Backpackers, thanks for the memories and I love you.

Jan (Rerun) our Guide and we all love her. She has the patience of Job, the wisdom of Moses, the stamina of Michael Jordan and a heart of pure gold! She loves what she does and loves sharing her knowlege with others just as much. I truly miss her.
Leigh (Almanac) our Guide and we love her, too. Leigh is thoughtful and patient and kind. She is a motivator with a gentle demeanor. With her pixie like face, twinkly gorgeous blue eyes and toothpaste ad smile, I couldn't help but get a warm and fuzzy feeling just being around her!
Catherine (Songbird) our assistant Guide. We love her and her beautiful voice! Catherine is fun and knowledgable and has a good sense of where she was needed within the group while we were on the trail. She has patience and poise and a singing voice I would give anything to have!
Judy (Commando)She is one tough son of a gun. When Judy talks, everyone listens because you don't want to miss a word. She is witty and would come up with some of the funniest things I have ever heard. A world of wisdom. I miss you.
Ellen (Buckaroo) Ellen showed those young whippersnappers she had as much get up and go as they did! She was at the front of the group and somewhere in the front pack while on the trail through the whole trip! She can also sing and dance and she talks to horses! When the horses woke us up in camp before daylight, she was out shooing them away from our stuff that they kept trying to play with! I woke up to the sounds of the thundering of horses hooves and a little voice saying, quite sweetly "Shoo, shoo, go away, leave that alone, shoo, shoo"! It was just way too funny! She is a very special lady. I miss you, too.
Susan (Twinkle Toes) She could go out in the woods, hike all day, sweat like the rest of us and still look just as elegant as if she were ready to go to a tea party! Go figure! Is she hot or not?!! Such a beautiful person, inside and out! I miss you, too.
Karen (Doc) Karen was ready to cure what ails you on a moments notice and had anything you might need stashed somewhere in her gear? How'd she manage that, Rerun? Doc was also very entertaining with her quick wit and wry sense of humor. I think she may have some Sherpa blood running through her veins. At least she dressed like a Sherpa! I want you on my team all the time! She's got your back 100%. And, inside that tough exterior there lies a heart as soft as cotton candy and as big as all of the outdoors! Love ya' girl.
Patti (Beacon) You can look at her and see why she is called Beacon! She put the sunshine in every day! I have never laughed so hard in my life as I have at the shenanigans she and Doc always had going!
Katy (Twigs) Katy is the quiet type and even though she wasn't a big talker and stepped quietly when she walked, she helped me see things from a whole new perspective. She is a warm and caring person and I am glad she was part of our group.
Jan (Rerun) our Guide and we all love her. She has the patience of Job, the wisdom of Moses, the stamina of Michael Jordan and a heart of pure gold! She loves what she does and loves sharing her knowlege with others just as much. I truly miss her.
